September /October 2014 - I start thinking about setting up a web site to test programming and be able to publish things

October 16, 2014 - Register The-Competent-Man.com - I registered the web site after looking to see if anyone else has one of the same theme. I do find one other site but find that it has not been updated since 2010 so I do not think he will mind. I was going to register TheCompetentMan.com but hesitated after getting a price quote, then it was not available. I have heard of this happening, if you do a search for an intenet name but do not buy it at once, another company can then take over the name and hold it for a while. It is something related to the reserving the name by the internet provider. i.e. They have to be able to mark the name as being locked after checking to see if it is available but when someone does not purchase immedialtley, then other companies can register the name. They hope that you come back later and will pay them to buy the now reserved name from them.

October 17, 2014 to October 20, 2014 - Setup Web site and decide on programs to use. - While waiting for the web hosting company, godaddy.com, to finish making the web site available, I look and try to decide on what program to use. I look at Microsoft Expression Web 2.0 and Adobe Dreamweaver CS3. I use to use Microsoft FrontPage but that program was replace by Microsoft Expression Web. All of these programs are a few years old but I expect in the begining stages that they will be more than sufficienct for my purposes. If someday I reach the point where I can't do things that I want to with Dreamweaver, then I can go to a higher version.

October 21, 2014 - First upload to web site. - I finally figure out how to transfer files to the web hosting program in a secure format. I try to use the built in within Dreamweaver CS3 and end up giving up. I can get FTP from Dreamweaver CS 3 to work but that is not secure so it is not recommended. I either can't get the setting correct or it just does not work for secure updating of a web site. In the end I use Filezilla for secure web site updatres through SFTP. I end up with the first web page working. I also find that I can use W3C to verify the html code and put the link for that on each page. While I will not do this constantly, I will do it from time to time to make sure I am using the programming lanugauge properly and to avoid strange problems with errors in coding. One note when using SFTP is that some web hosting companies you need to set the SSH to the IP address you are uploading from, otherwise you can only get FTP transfers to work.

October 22, 2014 - Menu bar for web site - I look to see if the menu bar can be put into a CSS file. I see that the format of the menu can be specified but not the actual menu itself. It looks like on each web page that the menu would need to be specified. I am still not sure if this is correct or not but for the time the menu options will have to be put on each web page. It seems to me that one of the reason for a CSS file is to avoid retyping the same code over and over again but I do not see how to put the menu options within a CSS file.

October 23, 2014 - Document site developement so far - I updated the NEWS page to detail what has happened so far and to get the menu bar working for all web pages. I also added Google analytics to the web page and will see in future days what kind of stats the service provides.

October 27, 2014 - Visitor Tracking - I saw on some web sites that they have the ability to track visitors and generate maps and statistics that show where there visitors are from. I found Cluster Maps and added them as a test to the about tab on the web site. I anticiate to start working on making the site layout look better plus improving on the color scheme of the site. I also just got an email from Google's Adsense saying that ads should start appearing on the web site within a few hours ( 6:45PM EST). I look forward to seeing later today if ads will display proplery on the page. I am trying to see if the menu, the Adsense code and the Cluster Map code can be put onto a CSS file instead of on each, individual web page. On the Cluster Maps, I do see a single yellow dot on North America about where I am.

October 27, 2014 - Google Translate - I went through the process to get a translate add in widget. It is something I have seen on other web pages and added it here as a test.
